Scenes of celebration marked the lush green lawns of Unity College which became the venue for the meritorious Award 2011 on the 31st of October. The awards honoured the students who excelled in the ICSE and ISC boards, and also their respective teachers.
Honourable Union Minister of Law & Justice , Minority Affairs, Mr. Salman Khurshid , graced the occasion with his benign presence as the Chief Guest. The other distinguished guests from the renowned venues of the city Raja Mohd. Amir Mohd. Khan of Mahmoodabad and Justice Mr. Haider Abbas Raza , the President and the Vice President of Tauheedul Muslimeen Trust respectively became the honour of the awardees and the audience.
The ceremony commenced with the divine rendition of the Quranic verse followed by the Bhagwat Geeta Shloka with the same message to humanity.
Welcoming the Chief Guest and other invitees, College Secretary Brig. S. Yawar Husain expressed profound gratitude to them for their kind consent to attend the function. Principal Mr. Francis Castelino presented the college report chronicling the progress of the college and also the laurels brought by the students at different competitions held off the campus.
The exhulting hour of honour and accolade then began. All the ISC and ICSE toppers who scored 90% and above clinched gold medals while the 80% and above received silver medals. It was followed by special medals and scholarships- Babu Mahabir Prasad Memorial Medal was awarded to the ICSE toppers , Late Hidayat Husain memorial Medal and Scholarship of Rs. 3000/- to ICSE Science and Commerce topper boy and girl and the medal to ISC toppers , and Late Mukhtar Husain Memorial Scholarship of Rs. 2500/- to ISC and ICSE toppers in Mathematics. Next in row was the Unity College Scholarship of Rs. 2400/- that entitled the continuing students Namrah Khan and Farah Fatima. Then the Mohini Saxena special award of Rs. 3000/- was given to the best student from Pre-Primary, Primary and the Secondary Sections. Alongwith the students, the educators who gave the best results in the boards and the best teacher from all the three sections – Pre-Primary, Primary and Secondary were felicited with cash award and a certificate. Last but not the least, the High School and Intermediate toppers of Unity Mission School, an institute which is running under the aegis of the same parent body Tauheedul Muslimeen Trust, were conferred with medals and certificates. Twenty students of the same organization were donated cycles.
Applauding the meritorious performance of the students, Mr. Salman Khurshid appreciated that along with the topper students, their respective teachers were also awarded. He was very much impressed to see the true, democratic structure of the institute where the Quraan and the Bhagwat Geeta were recited simultaneously. He said that it gives a message of communal harmony to all minority institutes.
The curtain fell on the gala event with the vote of thanks by the College Chairman Dr. S. Kalbe Sadiq.
